The 5 Biggest Ceramic Coating Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)
A Message from the Experts at Car Lab Detailers
Ceramic coating is one of the best ways to protect your vehicle's paint, but most people unknowingly sabotage their results before they even leave the shop. In this quick guide, we’ll walk you through the 5 most common mistakes we see every day (and how to avoid them like a pro).
Mistake #1: Choosing the Cheapest Coating Package
“You get what you pay for.”
Cheap ceramic coatings often cut corners either in prep work, chemical quality, or longevity. Many last only 6–12 months and offer no real protection against UV rays or contaminants. Always ask: is the product professional-grade? Is proper prep included?
✅ What to do instead:
Choose a coating based on expected longevity, prep quality, and certified installer reputation, not just price.
Mistake #2: Skipping Paint Correction Before Coating
Ceramic coating locks in your paint’s condition for better or worse. If your vehicle has swirls, hazing, or scratches and they aren’t removed beforehand, the coating will seal them in permanently.
✅ What to do instead:
Always get at least a 1-stage paint correction before applying a coating. For darker or older vehicles, consider 2–3 stage correction.
Mistake #3: Washing the Vehicle Too Soon After Application
Ceramic coatings require 5–7 days to fully cure. Washing too soon can strip the coating and dramatically reduce its effectiveness.
✅ What to do instead:
Avoid all car washes (even touchless) for 7 days post-install. Let the coating cure in a dry, protected environment.
Mistake #4: Using Harsh Cleaners or Automatic Car Washes
Strong chemicals or abrasive brushes can dull or even damage ceramic coatings. Automatic car washes are the #1 reason coatings don’t last as long as promised.
✅ What to do instead:
Use pH-neutral soaps and soft microfiber wash mitts. Hand washing is always preferred.
Mistake #5: Thinking the Coating Is “Set It and Forget It”
Ceramic coatings reduce maintenance, they don’t eliminate it. Your coating needs occasional care to perform its best for years to come.
✅ What to do instead:
Apply a ceramic topper every 4–6 months and have the vehicle inspected by a professional at least once a year.
Bonus Tip: Use Certified Installers Only
A coating is only as good as the prep and install. DIY kits or uncertified shops often lead to premature failure. At Car Lab Detailers, all coatings are applied using LabCoat Ceramic Technology by certified experts.
